A U.S. Marine illuminates a building using an infrared laser only visible using night vision goggles while on a search operation for insurgents in the early hours of February 1, 2007 in Ramadi in Iraq's Anbar province. Buildings near the Government Center were destroyed by U.S. troops to deprive insurgents of shooting positions. American forces use night vision goggles, taking advantage of technology to aid the element of surprise and reduce the effectivness of insurgent snipers on U.S. forces. American officers say that insurgents usually do not have night vision capability. Ramadi has seen some of the heaviest fighting of the war, with some of the highest American casualties.
