Iraqi Shiites flagellate themselves on January 17, 2008 in the holy Shiite city of Karbala about 70 miles south of Baghdad, Iraq. Starting on Thursday, Iraqi authorities have imposed a three-day curfew in Baghdad and other 10 Iraqi provinces over fears of any violence acts during the Shiite religious festival of Ashura which is the anniversary of the killing of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Ashura, which means the tenth day in Arabic, will take place this year on January 20.
