Jake's Life: More about Jake Wood — Jun 11th 2007
A popular
story currently on the Netscape homepage concerns
Jake's Life, a blog written by Jake Wood, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq. In this email interview with sports blog
Lion in Oil, the 24-year-old Wood says he started his own blog simply to stay in touch with his family and friends.
"I didn't know what I was going to write about because I didn't know what I would see over here," writes Wood. "Even then I didn't know what I would censor. The writing is an escape for me. I don't like talking about what is happening over here. I don't like calling family and friends up and telling them or discussing it, but I still need to get it out. This is my medium, and it helps that the audience is largely anonymous."
Originally from Twentynine Palms, California, Wood attended the University of Wisconsin. The prevailing anti-Iraq war sentiment among students only made Wood more adamant about enlisting, according to this
Examiner article:
Wood had an exchange with a [student] protester that impacted his decision to enlist in the Marines, his father, Jeff Wood said. "He said, Dad, it hit me when some hippie ... came up to me and said, 'It's easy for you to say that (you support the war), you're in college, you've got a scholarship and everything else,'" the elder Wood said. "He told me, Dad, that guy was right. It is easy to say, 'This is what I believe,' when nobody is shooting at you.' He said, 'That's when I decided, just because it's easy, isn't right.'"

1. hello I believe that Jake Wood, a Marine lance corporal, is right untill you know what it is like shooting someone then you should keep your opinoins to your self. I don't know what it's like being over there, but when they come home we'd better be right there with open arms and big hearts and ears that when they want to talk let them. They dont want to be over there no of us want them over there either, but CONGRESS!!!!! not Pres. Bush, but the CONGRESS!!! sent them over there. Remember it takes an act of congress to go to war. So, we need to put them in there place sooner or nater..But My heart goes out for all the soldiers over there and the ones at home. I'm behind you all the way. Just please stay safe...
